Stage Six

Floor Structure

It's now time to choose the floor and there are, basically, three different types - suspended timber, solid concrete or beam and block.

Many houses have a combination with solid floors in the kitchen area to alleviate the risk of fire and wooden floors elsewhere, which are felt to offer greater warmth and a more natural feel. Increasingly, modern taste demands wooden floors which are not covered, exposing the natural beauty of the wood.

The decision on what type of floor to install will also depend on what services such as gas and electricity are to run under the floor and whether or not you have opted for underfloor heating.

As with every other aspect of your building, Wolseley experts will help you decide and then show you the best products to suit you.

Installing underfloor heating

This is also the time to install that underfloor heating system, if that is your chosen option. Underfloor heating offers a number of benefits over more conventional systems. It removes the need for radiators which maximises usable room space and it is very safe for children, the elderly and less able because there are no exposed hot surfaces. Underfloor heating delivers uniform heat and comfort levels with its energy efficient 'invisible' warmth which reduces convected airborne dust levels, resulting in far fewer allergic problems. Speak to your local Plumb Center and they can help you purchase the right underfloor heating for your project.
