Stage Eight
Joinery & Electric
Not the most obvious of partnerships, but joinery and electrics have one very important thing in common - both are done in two distince phases, commonly called "First Fix" and "Second Fix"

First Fix
This is all the work needed to take a building from foundation to putting plaster on the internal walls. It is the installation of items which won’t be seen when the building is finished.
In Joinery, it refers to activities such as the cutting and laying of floor joists and erecting studwork and partitioning. It includes fixing door linings and window boards, installing first floor decking and assembling and erecting the staircase.

Electrical Work
With regards to electrical work it involves fixing the network of cables around the shell of the house. This should only be undertaken by an experienced, registered electrical contractor.
Home Energy Efficiency
Reducing the amount of energy and power that we all consume is now a global challenge facing us all. To help you to meet this challenge Electric Center have used a green leaf symbol to clearly identify all electrical products that can genuinely be considered to be ‘energy efficient’ or which promote the efficient use of energy.
Sourcing Electrical Products
Electric Center is committed to sourcing quality products, from quality sources at competitive prices. However, we will never source products from suppliers who compromise the safety and well being of their employees in order to achieve lower costs. Electric Center is determined to ensure that our supplier partners operate and adhere to strict social and ethical codes. Therefore we demand full transparency in the entire product sourcing process and will not utilise sources that disregard the basic rights of their employees.
Did you know in most homes, lighting accounts for 15% of the electricity bill?
However, only 10% of the energy used in lighting is converted into light!
The rest of the energy is wasted in providing unwanted heat. The use of more energy efficient products could save homeowners significant amounts of money, help reduce carbon emissions and address new environmental regulations such as the Code for Sustainable Homes, 2007.
Recycling Electrical Waste
Recycling is nothing new, but with the advent of the WEEE (Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment) Directive which came into force on July 1st 2007 the focus on the reduction, responsible disposal and reprocessing of waste is even greater.
Electric Center, working in partnership with Recolight, now provides waste lamp collection facilities at local branches or on-site*. This service is available now and is completely free of charge to all of our customers. Simply return your waste lamps to your local Electric Center branch and we will ensure that they are safely recycled and disposed of.
*In certain cases it may be possible to site a collection facility at a customers own facilities provided that waste lamps are of a sufficient volume.
Lumicom is also working in partnership with Electric Center to offer advice and support on all matters relating to the safe collection, disposal and reprocessing of all waste lighting fixtures and luminaires. Whilst it is not possible to return your waste fixtures to Electric Center, we are committed to assist you with your recycling obligations. More advice is available at Lumicom.
Second Fix
Second Fix refers to all the work after the plastering to a finished house.
It includes the hanging of internal and external doors, the fixing of skirtings, architraves and decorative mouldings and finishing off the staircase and balustrading. As one of the UK's leading merchants of building supplies Build Center also carries an extensive ironmongery range to complement the heavyside product offering of bricks, blocks, timber, joinery, insulation and plasterboard.
The range includes door and window furniture and access controls, security products and general ironmongery, with strong links with the major brands and leading manufacturers including Assa Abloy, Briton, Carlisle Brass, Dorma, Era, Eurospec, Frisco, Geze, Hoppe and Yale.
After plastering is complete, the various light fittings, sockets and switches are installed.
Environmental Considerations
Double-glazing can cut heat loss through windows by as much as 50% and could significantly reduce your heating bill and reduce noise at the same time. If there are significant areas of glazing in your home it may be worth investing in low-emissive glass.
Roof windows, light pipes and internal windows allow light into areas closed off from external walls and reduce the need for artificial lighting. Where lighting is needed, the only option these days is to install low energy light bulbs.
